A single implant may be right for you if…

A single dental implant is one of several options for replacing one missing tooth — alongside a bridge, a partial denture, or leaving the gap. The right choice depends on your clinical situation, your priorities, and the clinician's assessment. Final suitability is determined at consultation.

Patient smiling — missing a front tooth

Missing a front tooth

The aesthetic zone — where appearance matters most. An implant crown is custom-shaded to match your surrounding teeth. The implant itself is invisible below the gum line.

What this looks like
Before and after — missing back molar replaced with dental implant

Missing a back or molar tooth

Chewing function and preventing surrounding teeth from drifting into the gap. Molars take the most pressure when you eat — an implant handles that load the way a natural tooth did.

How it restores chewing
Dental procedure — facing an extraction

Facing an extraction

Planning ahead means better outcomes. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same appointment as the extraction — avoiding a long gap and preserving the surrounding bone.

Dental scan — replacing an old bridge

Replacing an old bridge

When a bridge has reached the end of its life (typically 10–15 years), an implant is often the better next step — it doesn't require grinding the adjacent healthy teeth, and it preserves the underlying bone.

Bridge vs implant — how they compare
What can change over time

What a missing tooth may mean for the rest of your mouth.

Clinical evidence suggests that an unreplaced tooth can, over time, affect surrounding teeth and jaw bone. Individual outcomes vary significantly — your dentist will assess your specific clinical situation at consultation.

The jaw bone may begin to resorb

A tooth root stimulates the jaw bone as you chew. When the root is gone, that stimulation stops — and over time the bone in that spot may gradually reduce. The rate and extent of change vary between individuals.

Surrounding teeth may shift

Teeth either side of a gap can, over time, tilt towards the space. The tooth above or below may also move. Whether this happens — and how quickly — depends on the individual.

Chewing load may redistribute

Other teeth can end up carrying more of the chewing load. Over a long enough period this may contribute to wear or other changes — but individual factors (bite, diet, oral hygiene, overall health) all play a role.

The information above is general educational content, not a personalised clinical assessment. Whether any of these changes would affect you — and how significantly — is determined by your clinical situation and assessed at consultation.

Your options

Single implant or bridge — how they compare.

Two of the most common options for replacing a single tooth. Each has different characteristics. Your dentist will discuss what's clinically suitable for you at your free consultation — this information is general only.

Your journey — step by step

From consultation to your new tooth.

A single implant journey typically spans 4–6 months from first consult to final crown. Here's what happens at each stage.

1
Consultation — dentist speaking with patient
Day 0 — Free

Consultation + 2D X-rays

A free, 30–60 minute appointment with an AHPRA-registered dentist. We take 2D X-rays, review your situation, and give you a personalised treatment plan. No cost, no obligation to proceed.

2
Detailed diagnostics — 3D CT imaging and clinical planning
If proceeding

Detailed diagnostics

If you decide to proceed, a subsequent paid diagnostics appointment is booked. This includes 3D CT imaging and detailed clinical planning — the information we need to do the surgery safely and precisely.

3
Implant placement — surgical appointment
Surgery day

Implant placement

A single 60–90 minute appointment. Local anaesthetic is standard; IV sedation is available on request. If a tooth needs to come out first, it's typically done at the same visit. You go home the same day.

4
Osseointegration — healing phase
3–6 months

Osseointegration

The implant integrates with your jaw bone — this is what gives the final tooth its strength and longevity. You wear a temporary crown or leave the site alone depending on where the implant is. Most patients return to normal eating within a week.

5
Final crown fitting
Day 120–180

Final crown

Once the implant has integrated, we take final impressions and your custom crown is made. The crown is shaded to match your surrounding teeth. Fitting is a single appointment.

Long-term maintenance: An implant is cared for like a natural tooth — regular brushing, flossing, and 6-monthly hygiene visits. With proper care, implants are designed to last decades.

Common questions

What patients ask most.

The surgery itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you don't feel anything during the procedure. IV sedation is available at select clinics for patients who are anxious. Afterwards, most patients describe the discomfort as similar to having a tooth extracted — manageable with over-the-counter pain relief for 2–3 days. We'll give you written aftercare instructions at the surgery appointment.
Most patients take 1–2 days off work after implant surgery. You can return to soft foods within a day and normal eating within a week. The implant itself takes 3–6 months to fully integrate with your jaw bone — during that healing period you go about your life as normal.
The crown that sits on the implant is custom-shaded to match the surrounding teeth, so the result is visually consistent with the rest of your smile. The implant itself sits below the gum line — invisible.
With proper care — regular brushing, flossing, and 6-monthly hygiene visits — implants are designed to last decades. Some of the earliest modern implants placed in the 1980s are still in function today. Individual outcomes depend on oral hygiene, bone health, and general health factors.
The implant itself, the abutment, and the custom crown. Not included: 3D CT imaging (if required), bone graft (if required), sinus lift (if required), sedation upgrades, and extractions (if a tooth needs to come out first). Your dentist will give you a full written quote at consultation before any treatment starts.
We accept common payment methods at MID. If you choose to use a third-party payment platform, we accept Humm, Afterpay, and TLC (Total Lifestyle Credit) — these are independent providers and approval, fees, and terms are set by each provider directly. Speak with them to assess suitability. We're happy to talk through payment timing at your consultation.
Most major funds cover part of the cost under major dental. The exact amount depends on your level of cover and annual limits. We are a Preferred Provider for HBF, Medibank, Bupa, NIB, Qantas Assure, smile.com.au, HCF, and CBHS. We can give you a HICAPS quote at consultation so you know the gap before you commit.
Yes — the initial consultation is free, with no obligation to proceed. It includes 2D X-rays and a personalised treatment plan. If you decide to proceed, a subsequent paid diagnostics appointment is booked for 3D imaging and detailed clinical planning. You only pay for diagnostics if you decide to move forward with treatment.
As with any surgery, there are risks — including infection, nerve irritation, sinus involvement (for upper implants), and implant failure. Failure rates are low (around 2–5%) but not zero. Your dentist will go through all the risks specific to your situation at the consultation, in writing.
